On New Year's Eve, Dr. Steven Monks (Richard Johnson) calls for a quarantine in the British city of Bath after diagnosing a case of smallpox. His attention to the crisis is compromised by his struggling marriage to Julie (Claire Bloom), a former nurse whom he cheated on, who turns out to be infected herself.
