Marushka (Florence Hoath) lives with her grandmother (Joan Plowright) and grandfather (Ian Bannen) in 1950s Czechoslovakia. While the girl's mother (Imogen Stubbs) tries to advance her acting career by currying favor with Communist officials, Marushka's uncle (Hugh Laurie) is an outspoken dissident, drawing the attention of the authorities and causing tension in the family.
