Optimistic Italian laborer Geremio (Sam Wanamaker) heads to the United States, hoping to raise enough money to marry his hometown sweetheart, Annuziata (Lea Padovani). Geremio discovers that the stateside economic climate is less forgiving than he expected, but resolves, nonetheless, to immigrate there with his lover and start a family.
