James (Jeff Garlin), a struggling actor, lives with his mother (Mina Kolb) and binges on junk food. Though usually unlucky in love, he begins a tentative relationship with a music-loving schoolteacher (Bonnie Hunt), but what really gives him a new sense of purpose is the revelation that his favorite film, "Marty," is being remade.
