In 1958, baseball star Roy Campanella (Paul Winfield) nearly loses his life in a car crash. Although lucky to be alive, the accident leaves him paralyzed, without any hope of ever playing ball again. Emotionally shattered by the event, Campanella grows resentful of his plight, pushing away his wife, Ruthie (Ruby Dee), and son, David (Ty Henderson).
