Nazi Treasure Hunters
In 1945, Allied soldiers discovered a huge repository of art in the extensive salt mines in the Austrian town of Altaussee. This art had been stolen by the Nazis and was intended for Hitler's planned Führermuseum in Linz, and included over 6,500 paintings as well as hundreds of sculptures, books, coins, weapons, furniture, and other art. Although this cache was safely recovered, there is speculation that many other pieces of art were smuggled to safety during the Nazi regime, and today treasure hunters and investigators are on the trail of these lost artworks.
