After San Francisco bookie Hal Towers (Henry Morgan) refuses to pay syndicate protection money, his long-time friend, racketeer Dan Gannin (George Raft), finds him dead. Investigating the murder is another close friend, Detective Barney Runson (William Bendix), but Dan refuses to provide Runson with information.
