Arturo (Dirk Bogarde), a priest on the run from the Loyalists during the Spanish Civil War, meets up with cabaret dancer Soledad (Ava Gardner), who hides him in her apartment. Already struggling with his faith, Arturo falls in love with Soledad and contemplates leaving the priesthood.
