Letter carrier Ben Harris (Eli Wallach) broods about the emptiness and injustice of life in his small basement apartment in Greenwich Village. One day he decides to lash out by kidnapping a beautiful young girl, but is disappointed when he all can find is 40-something housewife Gloria Fiske (Anne Jackson).
