Shasta Delaney was born in Rio Lobo, Texas in 1843. She married young, but her husband - a drinker and a gambler - was killed in a gunfight with a man whom he had accused of cheating. Delaney was forced to provide for herself while working at a saloon, where she was frequently harassed by male patrons.
