Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology, palaeontology, geology, archaeology and anthropology. D'Orbigny was born in Couëron, the son of a ship's physician and amateur naturalist.
