About Caodong School
Caodong school is a Chinese Chan Buddhist branch and one of the Five Houses of Chán. The school emphasised sitting meditation, and the "five ranks" teaching. During the Song dynasty, Caodong masters like Hongzhi Zhengjue developed "silent illumination" meditation.
