Charles Diggs Sr. Life story
Charles Coles Diggs Sr. was the first African-American Democrat elected to the Senate of the State of Michigan. Born in Tallula, Mississippi, to James J. Diggs and Lilly Granderson, Diggs moved to Detroit in 1913, where he owned a successful funeral home on the lower east side.
