About Colón Province
Colón is a province in central Panama. It contains the northern gateway of the Panama Canal, the landmark shipping channel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Outside the provincial capital, Colón City, the Gatún Locks open for massive Panamax ships transiting the canal. Gatún Dam, built in the early 1900s, created the artificial Lago Gatún, an important part of the canal.
