About Colonel Redl
Loosely based on a true story, this film centers on an ambitious officer in the Austrian Army, Col. Redl (Klaus Maria Brandauer), who rises through the military ranks by informing on other soldiers for his own gain. He's made head of the intelligence division, rooting out traitors and spies -- and, at the same time, passing on military secrets to the Russians. Redl is also wracked with guilt concerning his homosexuality, which he keeps hidden, although some people have their suspicions.
