About Copán Department
Copán is a department in the western highlands of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. It's best known for remains of the important Mayan city Copán, which flourished from the 5th to 9th centuries A. D. Extensive ruins include temple pyramids, the royal Acropolis, intricately carved stelae and the Hieroglyphic Stairway. The on-site Sculpture Museum contains stone carvings and a red-painted replica of Rosalila Temple.
