In Mountain City, two newspapers are pitted against each other. One is owned by gangster Charles Gillette, the other by Ralph Houston (Fred MacMurray). Gillette tries to buy Ralph's newspaper, but Ralph refuses his offer, angering his girlfriend, Vina Swain (Frances Farmer).
