Antonio (Vittorio De Sica), transferred to a small central Italian town to take charge of the police force, hopes to settle down once and for all. His eye falls on Maria (Gina Lollobrigida), a vivacious beauty half his age who is infatuated with Pietro (Roberto Risso), one of Antonio's young underlings. While Antonio courts Maria, he is in turn pursued by Annarella (Marisa Merlini), the town midwife. The romantic entanglements work themselves out as the gossiping townsfolk look on. …
