Bernie Sanders: Who are the democratic White house candidates?

Bernie Sanders , a 78-year-old senator from Vermont, is a front-runner in the Democratic race for President. The registered independently carried out, as well as to choose in The First States. So, who is he?

Senator Bernie Sanders loves to beat The Odds . His first political victory, running in 1981 for the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, pitted him against the democratic machine that had controlled The City for decades.

Mr. Sanders won with a lead of 10 votes, But the political newcomer is still faced with huge resistance from The City Council. On the Vermont Council of The City , 11 out of 13 members, who conspired against Mr. Sanders, and active against his Agenda .

This is the same Democratic machine, worked to thwart his re-election two years later, But Mr. Sanders emerged as the winner - This Time by More Than 20 percentage points. The battle offered an early taste of Mr Sanders' career, which have shown a nearly 40-year-old, the challenge to the political establishment.

Bouncing back from a bitter loss for the former US First Lady and Secretary of state Hillary Clinton in 2016, Mr Sanders is running for The Top prize. This Time around, he suffered a Heart Attack and fundraised More Than $100m (£77m).

Here is a look at is, who is he and what is the self-proclaimed democratic socialist.

Mr. Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York , to Jewish parents. Once he said his humble upbringing in a tiny apartment class made him aware at an early age.

He attended the University of Chicago, and in the 1960s and 1970s participated in anti-war and civil rights activism, the 1963 March On Washington.

He applied for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War , But he was too old to be drafted, by the time that rejected his application was.

Mr. Sanders in politics in 1971, running for a U.S. Senate seat in Vermont, a liberty Union candidate, a party with anti-war and socialist roots. He lost the race, along with a couple of campaigns to be Governor .

Bernie Sanders speaks at a Committee for Racial equality Sit-In in 1962,

came His first major political success when he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in 1980, proposed a six-term incumbent. He went on to serve Fort, four terms.

It was during This Time that he met and married his present wife, Jane O'meara, former President of Burlington College Once described as "the main adviser" in his political career. Combined, they have four children from previous relationships.

He was first The First independent, not in 40 Years elected to the U.S. house of representatives in 1990. He served there until he ran for and won a seat in The Senate in 2007. During this campaign, a younger Barack Obama stumped for him.

Since The First arrival in Washington, Mr. Sanders against the Republican and Democratic politicians alike as required to the wealthy donors and industries has for this, he was sometimes dismissed as a gadfly. He is the senior independent congressional history.

In 2010, he famously stood up and spoke for eight-and-a-half hours to block to try the extension of the Bush-era tax policy, Mr. Sanders said, benefited the rich and degrades The Nation in the income gap.

He was The Chairman of The Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs in 2013 and helped The Party to negotiate cross-cutting solutions, when former soldiers complained, dangerous, delayed, and insufficient supply in the whole country. He was a staunch opponent of the Iraq War .

He is fond of praising The Social policy of the Nordic Countries , such as universal healthcare and paid leave for new parents. He wants free college and you will delete all student debt.

Mr. Sanders was attacked for his voting record on gun ownership, including its opposition to the various forms of the Brady Bill, background checks and waiting periods for gun buyers. He says that his record reflects only the priorities of his Vermont constituents.

In the year 2016, during his last presidential run, Mr. Sanders jumped into the democratic race as a long-shot candidate, squaring off against the establishment favourite Hillary Clinton. But , again, Mr Sanders, confused expectations: setting fundraising records and, for a time, the doubts about the Once -seemingly inevitable nomination of Hillary Clinton.

Now, anti-establishment tone intact, Mr Sanders will run on a characteristic of the progressive platform, with Medicare for all, which is a $ 15 minimum wage and tuition-free public school. He is quick to note that many of the items that are on his Agenda - are at Once Radical - are now embraced by Democrats.

Still, some democratic leaders remain skeptical that Mr. Sanders could win, that your party will galvanize the nomination, a certain degree of doubt, it seems to him.

In October, his candidacy seemed to be in danger, after Mr. Sanders suffered a mild stroke and was forced to suspend his campaign. The sequence ignited criticism that Mr Sanders is too old to compete for The Presidency . The Vermont senator - who is 79, by the choice of the day - would be the oldest U.S. President in history.

But within a few weeks he was again strengthened by a sponsorship of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, The Party of the liberal darling and youngest U.S. congressmen.

Mr. Sanders is an uncompromising curmudgeon - he shrugged off a recent request from Mrs Clinton that no one likes him, namely: "On a Good Day , my wife likes me. "And some of the other candidates could keep up with the tell the voters crying baby, "the down". But Mr. Sanders' supporters say, it goes to show that he is authentic.

He now draws crowds in the tens of thousands, because he makes the case that the 2020 election won, because his principle and policy, not in spite of it. And if The Outsider candidate is in the position, in the case of a victory in Iowa, he may be poised to beat The Odds Once Again .
