About Haptoglobin
Haptoglobin is the protein that in humans is encoded by the HP gene. In blood plasma, haptoglobin binds to free hemoglobin, compared to hemopexin that binds to free heme, released from erythrocytes with high affinity and thereby inhibits its oxidative activity.
