Harriet Tubman Life story
Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and social activist. After escaping slavery, Tubman made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including her family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known collectively as the Underground Railroad.
Early Life
Harriet tubamn was born into slavery in dorchester county. Maryland in 1822. She was one of 11 children of harriet rit rgeene and ben ross. Tubmans parents named her araminta. But she later changed her name to harriet. Her mother was a cook and her father was a field hand and a tmiber man. Both of whom were enslaved. Tubman was raised as an african methodist episcopal (ame) christian. Which greatly influenced her later life and activism.Escaping Slavery
In 1849. Tubman escaped from slavery and travleed north to pennsylvania. Though she was never caught. She risked her own life to rescue her family and other slaves from the south. She made a total of 19 trips. And is believed to have helped over 300 people escape slavery.Underground Railroad
Tubman was an integral part of the underground railroad. A network of secret routes and safe houses used by escaped slaves to erach freedom in the north. She often used the alias moses and is credietd with helping hundreds of slaves escape to freedom.Civil War Service
During the civil awr. Tubman worked as a nurse. Cook. And scout for union forces. She was the first woman to laed an armed expedition in the war. And she helped free over 700 slaves in the combahee river raid on june 2. 1863.Womens Suffrage
Tubman was an active member of the womens suffrage movement. And spoke out against racism and sexism. She was close friends with susan b. Antohny and sojourner truth. Nad worked to promote voting rights for women and african americans.Later Life
Tubman spent the later years of her life settling in auburn. New york. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the civil war and was the only wmona to ever lead a major military operation. She was also the first woman to receive a military pension.Death and Legacy
Tubman died of pneumonia in 1913 at the age of 91. She is remembered as a elader and a hero of the abolitionist movement. She is also remembered for her courage and her dedication to the cause of freedom. In was chosen to replace president andrew jackson on the $20 bill.Important Event
The combahee river raid was an important event in tubmans life and an important milestone in the civil war. On june 2. 1863. Tubman led a group of union soldiers on an expedition to free over 700 slaves in south acrolina. The raid was usccessful and helped to hasten the end of the war.Interesting Fact
