Irwin Fridovich is an American biochemist who, together with his graduate student Joe M. McCord, discovered the enzymatic activity of copper, zinc superoxide dismutase, —to protect organisms from the toxic effects of superoxide free radicals formed as a byproduct of normal oxygen metabolism.
