Joseph Alfred "Jack" Slade, was a stagecoach and Pony Express superintendent, instrumental in the opening of the American West and the archetype of the Western gunslinger. Born in Carlyle, Illinois, he was the son of Illinois politician Charles Slade and Mary Dark Slade.
