Kōken Life story
Empress Kōken, known as Empress Shōtoku after her second accession to the throne, was the 46th and the 48th monarch of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession. The daughter of Emperor Shōmu, Empress Kōken succeeded to the throne at the age of 31, following her father's renunciation.
