BBC Sound of 2020: joy Crookes grabs fourth place
Joy Crookes channels the Hindu goddess Lakshmi in the video to Don \ ' T Let Me Down
in The Last two years, the Joy Crookes has released enough Music to be, a (significantly) complete the debut album.
Those early EPs and singles show a differentiated and individual ear for melody, while "mad honest" texts which describe Love Lost and found, the on the rainy streets of South East London. You have earned her fourth place on the BBC Sound of 2020 list, the tips, the actions for success in the next 12 months. However, if the attention is not welcome, Crookes is sure That she enjoys it. "how does it feel? Fear Central's how it feels!", The Singer laughs. "I could answer That fairly, But to be honest, it feels as if You are going to "Winter Wonderland" and get to this huge tower That rises over Hyde Park And Then - whomp - it falls and your stomach rises to your neck. "It's an incredible feeling, because there is so much adrenaline, But The Other half is like, 'I'm going to die, I'll die, I'll die!'"The 21-year-old in Bangladesh-Irish descent, first came to attention when they released a cover of Hit The Road Jack on YouTube, like a teenager. Since then, she's developed a sound That combines the eclectic range of Music played by her father, as he drove her to her weekly Irish dancing lessons. "My father wanted me to be a real education, from Nick Cave through to King Tubby , all the Pakistani Music ," she says. "He would say, 'This is from your end of The World , You should listen to this. '"celebrate your position at the sound of the 2020 list, Crookes took a break from recording their actual debut to chat album, their rise to fame, identity, Liberty X , hectic of their school-friends, and the pressure to be successful. Joy Crookes was chosen for the BBC Sound of 2020 list of a panel of 170 Music critics, radio, festival Booker and former candidates - including Lewis Capaldi , Chvrches and Billie Eilish . The Top Five were. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What is your first memory? When I was three or four, I went into my mom's room and put it on her knee-high boots, then I called My Family like, 'mom! Papa! Assemble!' she sat on the sofa, and I went in and joined them Just A Little by Liberty X . We had it on VHS and I stood in front of the TV to do the moves. Great song selection. Maybe Not for a three year old! I remember The Night I got my mum to cut a hole in my black vest because the girl had leather PVC suits with holes where her cleavage would be. I mean, I had a splitting into three or four, But I wanted to look like You . is your first memory of a musical? Yes, it is so vivid in my head. I was so, so focused on this performance. I had not even practiced once, I was like, "This is Shine my Time !" The Singer was also nominated for the British Rising Star award, But I've heard they were very entrepreneurial as a child. Where did You find out? But Yes, when I was about nine, I it me for £80 it would cost to get all My Family Christmas gifts. So I went to Poundland in Elephant and Castle, and You can buy a box of 10 candy canes for £1. I worked out That if I sold each for £1, I could make, 900% profit. I also had a side hustle selling clothes, because That £80 needed quickly. If someone said, "That top looks good on You ", I would say, "I'll give it to You for a fiver". If my mates came round to Our House , little did they know, it was leisure, it was selling Time ! If The Music doesn't work, You can apply for The Apprentice . I'll probably! she grew up listening to Music - But there's a point where You thought was, "This is something I can do for a career?"never, because I never thought Music was a legitimate job. I thought That pop stars were pop stars and That 's who they were. I almost didn't came to You as a human being, to Kate Nash . You made it clear to me That I could use The Music as a diary. I have been through a lot at home and I had no one to talk to, so I put myself on my guitar But I really wasn't thinking, "Oh, I'm a musician Now ". The Singer -songwriter is self-taught on The Guitar , piano and bass As You learn to play? The Piano , and I learned a few chords on the school, then I taught myself the songs from the movie Once by looking up The Chords on YouTube. With The Guitar it was the same: I had two chords of a friend of the family, then I went home and learned a lot from Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber songs, because, no offense, I thought it would be easy. I used a Cabinet That had a mirror, so I would sit and watch me play The Guitar . This is really good, if You want to learn, because You can see where your hands go. So That was my mentality, And Then I started writing That . What happens next? My mother's friend had A Son who was my age and played the incredible Brazilian guitar. I loved Astrud Gilberto , so I asked him round to me, and I said, "do You know The Song Hit The Road Jack? I think we should cover it". So we took it in iMovie, put it on YouTube and it was the 500,000 Views - That was crazy. things That exploded really in the year 2017, when she played a mother, I Can sleep With danger on the YouTube channel of colors. The video has Now been watched 8 million times. Did You change your profession? The Song was never a single. I wrote it on My Own , on The Piano , on The First of January 2017. But the colors, the performance, the more sense than the record, because I have The Song on the tour. If You tour a song, You know it - You will spend The Night at his house, You meet your mom, You don't learn the brothers and sisters like it. So by the Time we have colors, it was a walk in The Park . The performance was to take our third, and I remember how I pretended my mum was just there, and I sang it to her. The video really changed everything. For about six months after That everywhere I went, people would say, "You Are the joy of colors?"You didn't think Music was a viable career, so I did this video force You to write, the story in your head? It definitely occurred there. We had in Germany [video] and I was like, 'What do You mean, I fly to Berlin to work, to sing songs?' But even after That , I went for a job interview as a waitress in a Kurdish restaurant. You Got The Job ? no! As soon as I went for The Interview , I regretted it. The manager looked at me like, "What do You mean You can't work most days?"Several of their songs, as For A Minute, and London, my, Love Letters to London. Why has it inspired You so much? The beauty of London is That it would not be London without all the immigration and the mixture of cultures and colours and the scents and the stories That it contains. I grew up on a street where my neighbors are Bayan and the neighbors are Bengali and the neighbor after That are from Nigeria. I learned so many of the behaviors and various forms of respect and the stories and the myths and legends from all these places. I would not be the person I Am , without London. It inspired me to be a certain type of woman and a certain kind of person. Crookes is currently recording their debut album with a self-imposed deadline of May 2020 American musicians often eulogise their places of origin, But it is not so common in the UK. Why is this so? I love my area and London as a whole, so I think I should sing and celebrate. But if I write about London, it is also a reaction to the austerity measures of The Last 10 years. For A Minute, is about Growing Up in an area That May be not rich or vibrant, But make the best of things, such as £2 to The Chicken shop after school. It's a lyric, "to eat is sunshine Every Day ", this is a comment on poverty. Then I talk about it, "creamy legs in the London air," because when I was Growing Up , all The Girls of the Secondary School , mainly black and brown, would be The Most moisturised legs That You ever seen in your life. So I try and have a positive message: "Hey, this is the sick stuff about London. If we all Packed up and left, and went back to India, Yorkshire or wherever, You would not know what to do. It would not be London. "There is a fearlessness, as they talk about relationships. I love the line in The World of man - "I Find My love in Red Wine ". I was very angry when I wrote That ! I say, I think my love of something, an object, unlike You . You are less important to me than a drink. at least, alcohol is always there when You need it. Exactly. This is probably a very Irish Embassy! On a more serious note, have You played a new song recently, That the addresses of your Mental Health . whence comes the pressure to succeed come from? thank God.music, sound of 2020
