Maria Gansevoort Melville Life story
Maria Gansevoort Melville was the mother of the author Herman Melville. She was born in 1791 in Albany, New York, the daughter of Peter Gansevoort and Cattrina Van Schaick. Her family, the Gansevoorts, had come to the Colonies in the 1600s and was one of the first Dutch families of Albany.
