About Maritime Republics
The maritime republics of the Mediterranean Basin were thalassocratic city-states in Italy and Dalmatia during the Middle Ages. The strongest among them were Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi; less known are Ragusa, Gaeta, Ancona, and Noli.
