Asda, the changes in the contract are "just not fair"

Feb 16,2020 7:21 am

Cathy Murphy has worked at Asda for More Than four decades.

Cathy Murphy worked for Asda for The Last 44 years and it says the employer has an "absolutely amazing".

said recently, the supermarket chain, Mrs Murphy will be fired, unless she writes under a new contract which will strip them of their long-service benefits, from paid tea-breaks and holidays.

it is one of the thousands of employees that was told to sign the new contract, the 2. November or leave The Business . But Ms Murphy describes it as "just not fair".

The GMB union says up to 12,000 workers a choice between signing the new contracts of employment, higher wages to £9 an hour, but scrap many other benefits - or kicked out in the run-up to Christmas.

But Asda told the BBC: "This contract is an investment of More Than £80m, and increases the real numbers for More Than 100,000 colleagues. "

Despite this, Ms Murphy for the night shift-employees who have their pay cut, as well as people with the care of the tasks may be problems with the new contracts.

Ms Murphy has worked in the fruit and vegetable section in Asda is a CELTIC forge store in Glasgow.

As a Union representative, she was aware of The Contract changes since the spring. However, your colleagues in the branch only found out by meeting with managers in the summer.

the workers received a certificate that said she would have private meetings or one-to-ones (121s) - with the management.

"As part of the 121 process, we hope that you agree, that with the new contract," Asda said in the document. "If you still don't want to sign the new contract at their last 121 we will give you notice of termination of their employment relationship. "

The staff said that is not signed, the new contract would "leave the economy" at the end of your notice period.

Then, at the beginning of this month, Asda bosses a leaflet given to you with tips for a new job.

He suggested to employees to use their local job centre, you will receive an E-Mail address and offered to write advice on the CV. Ms Murphy , called the leaflets "condescending".

It is not the First Time Asda has tried that employees on flexible contracts.

"in highly competitive industries'

In 2017, the supermarket chain in exchange for voluntarily switching to a new contract that introduced unpaid breaks and requirement of the work over the holidays.

But over the summer, these changes were made mandatory.

The GMB union wrote to the supermarket chain, which asks, owned by US retail giant Walmart, has., to delay the introduction of the new contracts

"On 2. November, we understand, up to 12,000 of their loyal Asda workers will get the sack just before Christmas," it said in a letter over the weekend. "That can't be right. "

But Asda says the vast majority of the employees signed the new contract.

"We have been clear that we want each of our colleagues leave us," a spokesman said, said the changes would help The Chain "to adapt to the requirements of the fiercely competitive retail sector".

Ms Murphy thinks that The Chain runs through with his threat to fire the rest, but she says it is unfair, after More Than four decades for the supermarket chain.

"I'm coming to the end of my professional life," she says. "And for this to happen [now], it's just not fair.

"It's not fair. "
