Nowa Huta

A major stop on “communist” tours of Krakow, gritty Nowa Huta is a Social Realist district with huge housing blocks that were built for propaganda purposes. The PRL Museum explores Poland under communism, while the brutalist, volunteer-built Arka Pana Church is a symbol of Polish Catholic defiance of communist rule. The wooden churches of St. John and St. Bartholomew are a contrast to the stark apartment buildings.
