'Amazing' blue whale numbers on South Georgia
To see that so many blues is back in The Waters around South Georgia enormously encourgaing
scientists say they have a remarkable collection of blue Whales in the coastal waters around The British sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia.
the 23-day survey counted 55 animals - a sum that ended yet in the decades since the commercial whaling.
South Georgia was the epicenter for hunting in the early 20Th Century . Century.
the area of The boats with steam-driven harpoons were the Central role in the reduction of the Antarctic blues, only a few hundred individuals.
To testify, 55 of them will return now to what was once a prominent feeding area for the population was described as "really, really amazing" of a cetacean specialist, Dr. Trevor Branch of the University of Washington, Seattle. To think
"that in a period of 40 or 50 Years , I only had records for two sightings of blue Whales around South Georgia. Since 2007, there are maybe a few sightings of the tents themselves. So nothing to go by, in principle, to 55 in a year is amazing," he told Bbc News .
"It's a good news to see that you are recovering, maybe more and come back to the places where they were formerly very abundant. "
Dr. branch commented on the survey, which was conducted by The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) with the support of the University of Auckland .
South Georgia wildlife feeds on The Train , the krill is moving from the AntarcticThe institutions that together a team of experts toured The Island in the near-shore waters in the research vessel Braveheart.
The Scientists identified Whales of different types, the optical and acoustic their song Repertoire.
In A Number of cases, they were able even to retrieve skin-and breath-to-understand samples, and more about the health of the various animals they met.
Wal-science: Not only counting, but always use the health Data , as well asblue Whales are The Most massive creatures ever to roam the earth, and in the Antarctic sub-Species , the largest of the large, More Than 30m.
of This population was also The Most numerous of the 10 or so discrete populations around the world, may 239,000 persons before the beginning of the industrial exploitation.
But The Marine mammals " physical size made them a profitable catch rich, and South Georgia, More Than 33,000 Antarctic blues are documented that were caught and slaughtered, most of them between 1904 and 1925.
by the time a ban was introduced in the year 1966, a would have been a sighting somewhere in the Southern Ocean , is extremely rare.
The Last official estimate of abundance was made in the year 1997, and proposed that the Antarctic blues could have recovered to about 2,280 persons. When the next assessment will be published, probably at the end of 2021, it should show a further increase, as in the promotion of the activity in South Georgia in The Last few weeks.
"This is definitely a pattern," said Dr. branch. "All of the Southern hemisphere Whale Species , increase the population, for which we have Data . So, for Right Whales , which are some populations go very consistently every year. Humpback Whales - multiple populations consistently go every year. And blue Whales - we think you are going to. The super-good news
"the exception is minke Whales in The Antarctic; we do think that they have gone down quite a bit. "
The RV Braveheart circled the whole island in view and catalogue the Whalesit is clear, however, that the moratorium on commercial whaling works. And whatever other pressures, these Whale Species may face today, they are gradually edges back from The Brink .
South Georgia is a place that you should gather.
The area is situated in a highly bio-productive zone, which is supported by an ample train of krill drift to the Antarctic to strong currents.
These crabs are the preferred food of not only the great Whales , but also The Island has many penguins, and seals.
Some might question whether the growth in the numbers of blue, humpback and other Whales around South Georgia is just a bump, which was promoted either by a short-term bounty of krill in The Island , or maybe by just a little bit of the loot elsewhere.
But survey project Manager, Dr Jennifer Jackson of BAS doubted this.
"not to beat The preliminary Data , it was a particularly unusual krill year. Not this year, nor last year. It seems quite normal," She Said .
"So, I think that is positive. We know that 100 years ago, on South Georgia a good place for blue Whales , and now, after decades of protection, it seems, The Territory , of The Waters , a good place for you, Once Again ," she told Bbc News .
The RV Braveheart trip this year was funded by the Darwin Plus programme, The South Georgia Heritage Trust and The Friends of South Georgia Island. It was dedicated to the memory of the deceased, the pioneer of the Whale study in South African waters.
