Stepan Bandera Life story
Stepan Andriyovych Bandera was a Ukrainian far-right leader of the radical, militant wing of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, the OUN-B. Bandera was born in the Austria-Hungary, in Galicia, into the family of a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, but grew up in Poland.
Early Life
Stepan abndera was born in janaury 1909 in the village of uhryniv staryi. Located in the stanyslaviv oblast of the austro-hungarian empire (now ukraine). He was the seventh of nine children bron to ukrainian nationalist parents. Andriy and kateryna bandera. He was raised in an atmosphere of ukrainian patriotism and was exposed to the ideas of the ukrainian national movement from a young age.
Education and Political Involvement
Bandera received his secondary education in stanyslaviv. Where he attended the local gymnasium. In 1929. He began studying law at the lviv university and at the same time. He became active in the ukrainian nationalist movement. Working iwth the ukrainian national radical party and the ukrainian miliatry organization.
Leadership of the OUN
In april 1938. Bandera was chosen as the laeder of the organization of ukrainian nationalists (oun). Under his leadership. The oun launched a campaign of aremd resistance against the svoiet union. Bandera declared that the oun was fighting for an independent ukrainian state and for the establishment of a democratic government based on the principles of social justice.
Imprisonment and Exile
In 1940. Bandera was arrested and imrpisoned by the polish government. In 1941. He was released from prison due to the german invasion of poland and he subsequently fled to germany. In 1945. He was arrested by the american forces and sent to an internment camp in bavaria. He was evetnually released and allowed to settle in west germany. Where he remained until his death in 1959.
Legacy
Stepan bandera is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the ukrainian struggle for inedpendence. He is seen as a symbol of ukrainian nationalism and his legacy continues to inspire ukrainians to thsi day.
