ITV drama Quiz explores a millionaire coughing scandal
Clockwise from top left: Chris Martin of Coldplay, Craig David , Toploader, A1
if you can, please answer The Following multiple choice Question : Who had released a hit UK album with Born To Do It, in the year 2000? to identify
Most pop-music fans would be able to get the correct answer (D) is relatively easy. Born To Do, It's a huge album spawned multiple hit singles.
But the former British Army major Charles Ingram had no idea who Craig David was when he was asked this as a competitor on the ITV gameshow " Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" 2001.
He gave as much as he pondered on the possible answers to the £32,000 Question .
"I think it is A1," he told host Chris Tarrant . "I've Never Heard of, Craig David , to be honest. Coldplay, I've Never Heard of. I think I'll go for A1. "
So it was a surprise to everyone when he suddenly changed his mind and opted for Craig David , as his last answer, seemingly for no logical Reason .
Diana and Charles Ingram , pictured outside Southwark Crown Court in the year 2003It was an even bigger surprise when he all of these answers are correct, as well, ultimately, The Show 's £1m Jackpot win.
But Ingram the price will never get money.
The result, as soon as the recording was finished when the producers worked, he had an accomplice among the waiting candidates, the cough, every time Ingram read a correct answer out loud.
If The Accomplice , Tecwen Whittock, who did not know The Answer , Ingram's wife Diana would cough up the correct answer from his seat in The Audience .
All three were later the deception is found Guilty after a lengthy process at the Southwark Crown Court in 2003.
"It was this incredibly audacious heist," says the writer James Graham , who has adapted the coughing scandal in the three-part ITV drama Quiz .
"I thought of it as Ocean's Eleven or Mission: Impossible, but with a very middle-class people in Wiltshire.
"And instead of rappelling down skyscrapers, they had encyclopedias, and it was about the questions and answers. But essentially it is still about The Robbery of A Million pounds. "
Sian Clifford and Matthew Macfadyen Diana and Charles IngramThe ITV play-drama directed by Stephen Frears and stars Matthew Macfadyen as Major Ingram and Fleabag star Sian Clifford as his wife Diana Ingram.
Graham first tells The Story of how the cough of scandal in his staged version of the Quiz , which is played in Chichester before a successful West End transfer in the year 2018.
He tells The Story the same way on TV when he was in the Theater twice.
The First half of the Stage Show (and The First two episodes of the drama series), in principle, assume, Ingram was Guilty - that was, in fact, also the determination of the courts.
But also examines the Second Half of the possibility that he may have been innocent, and there is some evidence that supports this theory.
"He was painted in The Press as an idiot, someone who could not find the answers to these questions may have known," recalls Graham.
"But you forget that he has a degree in engineering, and he applied for admission to Mensa, and succeeded to him in The Top 2% of IQs in the Country . "
Quiz began its life as a theatre in The West End, transferred in the year 2018add to that the cough is heard, while the correct answers were not just a cough heard during the recording. There were a lot of coughs from The Audience , if wrong answers picked were.
Helen Mccrory , who also features in the ITV drama, recalls: "Chris Tarrant not hear the cough, the people on either side do not hear the cough, but for some Reason [Major Ingram] heard the cough, I mean, really? Well, maybe he has, maybe it was a complete set-up. But maybe he couldn't do it. "
Graham and the production team were in contact with the Ingram's, while the drama was filmed, and the pair visited The Set , and Clifford and Macfadyen met, The Actors would be to play them.
"Diana Ingram was painted as this Lady Macbeth character, and I don't think that is who she is," Clifford says. "You struck me as an introvert and a nerd, and someone who is shy, quite, pretty sweet, definitely naive. "
Most of The Cast open the possibility seems at least, that Ingram's could be innocent. But Chris Tarrant host says there's No Doubt the couple is to blame.
"I will for so many hours with The Police and Fraud Squad of the bands with the big Show , and he is so Guilty ," "It is as if you once lock-in, it is like oh, God. "
Tarrant is played by Michael Sheen in the new ITV adaptation.
Graham is the fact the drama broadcast on ITV, the channel on which The Scandal occurred in the First Place does not affect how he wrote The Story says.
"I never had a single note [from you], you were such a good Sport, all The Way , even though you knew from the very beginning, one of the Central theses is," were you right?' And the perceived narrative that they were responsible for telling quite correct?
"But I think it is a mischief, in the you put it on the station that was responsible for The Story , and it sets you free to do certain things. "
Quizzing networkThe TV series examines an element of The Story is not known - the existence of a small network, quizzers all over the Country to share tips on How To get on the map and reach The Jackpot .
The Group that The consortium is clear that Millionaire's researchers would always ask the same questions General Knowledge questions over The Phone when screening potential candidates.
The consortium increased together, the answers between themselves, the chances of each individual to get on the map.
they even offered a tailor-made service, where a competitor could make the ring A Number from your "phone-a-friend" lifeline, and your small band of General Knowledge , the experts would be on hand, as your friend, and you give The Answer .
the drama of the exploration of this group, and Ingram contact with you, continues to support the assumption that he was Guilty .
was running At the Quiz , as a Stage Show , theatre audience was given keypads and asked to vote at The End of The First half and Then Again at The End of the Second Half - if you thought that the Ingram's were Guilty or innocent.
"told The Audience at the beginning that you thought you were Guilty ," said Graham. "But then, at The End of the game, every single night, you are preaching to the innocent.
"Except, strangely, for matinees, we don't know why," he laughs. "Obviously, a different audience. "
" Quiz begins on ITV at 21:00 BST on Monday, 13. April .
