When Floyd Garden (Douglas Walton) tells his mistress, Madge (Frieda Inescort), that he will die in a steeplechase horse race -- and then does -- suicide is suspected. Suspicious, detective Philo Vance (Edmund Lowe) investigates, questioning all those at the house of millionaire Edgar Lowe Hammle (Gene Lockhart), who owns the horse Floyd rode.
