As his father, Big Dan (Ward Bond), lies dying, estranged son Daniel Halliday (Joseph Cotten) returns to the family cattle ranch and recalls why he left home. Years before, Big Dan discovered that his daughter, Martha (Betsy Blair), was in love with Native American ranch hand Jivaro (Christopher Dark) and had the young man arrested on false charges.
