World Conker Championships in Northamptonshire attracts thousands
By Nadia Gyane and Helen BurchellBBC News, Northamptonshire
Thousands of people have gathered to watch horse chestnut experts battle it out at The World Conker Championships.
The annual spectacle takes place at Southwick, near Oundle, and has been running since 1965.
This year 256 keen competitors have registered, with The Event regularly attracting fans from overseas.
The championship, which raises money for charities, culminates with the crowning of winners dubbed the conker king and queen.
You cannot use just any old conker in this highly-regulated competition.
The Nuts are gathered and strung by volunteers from Ashton Conker Club, which organises The Event .
The Rules of The Game are strict and state that conkers cannot be tampered with or reused, and there must be at least 20cm (8in) of lace between knuckle and nut.
Each player takes three alternate strikes at their opponent's conker, with a game decided once one of the conkers is smashed.
Fee Aylmore, who lives locally, was crowned women's champion at Last Year 's event.
The Men 's title went to Randy Topolnitsky who was visiting the UK from Calgary in Canada.
During its long history, The Competition has raised almost £500,000 for sight impairment charities.
