In turn-of-the-century Pennsylvania, Horace Pennypacker (Clifton Webb) divides his time between his two sausage factories in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. When his daughter, Kate, announces her sudden engagement, Horace hurries from Harrisburg to Philadelphia, unaware that his son Horace III is on his way to Harrisburg to warn him about a legal summons for touting Darwinism.
