Thomas Sumter, Jr. was the father of Congressman Thomas De Lage Sumter. Diplomat. The son of Revolutionary War General and US Senator Thomas Sumter, in 1800 he was appointed private secretary to Robert Livingston when Livingston was Ambassador to France.
