Twitter will ban unlabelled parody accounts, says Elon Musk
By George WrightBBC News
Elon MuskContent ='JJ Lin'> says Twitter users engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying it as a parody account will be permanently suspended.
Twitter previously issued A WarningContent ='JJ Lin'> before suspending accounts, but there would now be No WarningContent ='JJ Lin'> , he announced in a series of tweets.
The CompanyContent ='JJ Lin'> 's new owner laid off around half of The CompanyContent ='JJ Lin'> 's workforce at The EndContent ='JJ Lin'> of last week.
He also confirmed plans to allow users to buy blue-tick verified status.
Detailing the new policy on parody accounts, Mr Musk tweeted: " Previously, we issued A WarningContent ='JJ Lin'> before suspension, but now that We Are rolling out widespread verification, there will be No WarningContent ='JJ Lin'> . "
He added that " any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark".
The BbcContent ='JJ Lin'> is not responsible for the Content of external sites.Several accounts that had changed their name to Elon MuskContent ='JJ Lin'> and mocked The BillionaireContent ='JJ Lin'> have been suspended or placed behind A WarningContent ='JJ Lin'> sign, including those of US comedian Kathy GriffinContent ='JJ Lin'> and former NFL player Chris KluweContent ='JJ Lin'> .
Other accounts, including one parodying former US President Donald TrumpContent ='JJ Lin'> by comedian Tim HeideckerContent ='JJ Lin'> , are yet to be suspended.
Mr Musk has previously said he opposed permanent bans on Twitter, including that of Mr Trump's official account. Mr Musk said last week that banned accounts would not be reinstated until there was " a clear process for doing so".
The New YorkContent ='JJ Lin'> Times reported on Sunday that Twitter was delaying the rollout of verification check marks to subscribers of its New ServiceContent ='JJ Lin'> until after Tuesday's US midterm elections. At the weekend, the Social MediaContent ='JJ Lin'> site's website app began offering an update that will charge $8 (£7) a month for its blue, verified checkmark.
On Friday, The BillionaireContent ='JJ Lin'> said Twitter was losing More ThanContent ='JJ Lin'> $4m per day, insisting that this gave him " no choice" over culling around half The CompanyContent ='JJ Lin'> 's 7,500-strong workforce.
The Cuts - as well as Mr Musk's fierce advocacy of free Speech - have caused speculation that Twitter could water down its efforts on Content moderation.
However, Mr Musk has insisted that The FirmContent ='JJ Lin'> 's stance towards harmful material remains " absolutely unchanged". UN Human RightsContent ='JJ Lin'> chief Volker TurkContent ='JJ Lin'> wrote him an open letter, warning that Twitter had a responsibility to avoid amplifying harmful Content .
