Sex offender: "I have never had so many different thoughts'

Feb 16,2020 6:57 am

In the year of 2017 is the government's flagship treatment scheme for people convicted in England and Wales of rape or sexual abuse was scrapped, after it was shown to increase The Risk to re-offend. Two sex offenders BBC Radio 4 -file told on 4-to take a program, such as it was, part in the rehabilitation program.

"Everything that was discussed down to the smallest detail. You had the so-called "hot seat" and each prisoner was made to sit in a group in the hot seat, and they were bombed - it was like an Interrogation . "

This is Paul's experience of the group work on the discredited Sex-Offender Treatment programmes (SOTP), which ran from the beginning of the 1990s until 2017.

Paul was convicted of numerous offences, including rape, and there is a long prison sentence.

Talk me out of prison, pay phone, he says, he started the SOTP on three occasions - it is a cognitive-behavioral therapy teaches You to think of criminals and act differently.

But, says 60-year-old, every time he was removed from the course before the end, because the group of moderators, not "he thought to learn something".

'Deviant thought"

"as in the group settings, discussion of serious crimes and some less serious offences - because these groups were mixed - the actual prisoners, the prisoners do worse and normalizes what," he says.

rapists, murderers, sex offenders, and "turn signals" were all placed together, says Paul.

"people learn from their Mistakes - they were a sex offender, learning from other members of the group, as You may be better to be without getting Caught . "

the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) research results showed that 10% of the men who had completed reoffended, the SOTP, compared with 8% of those who had not done the program.

Kathryn Hopkins research revealed those who went on the SOTP were more likely to relapse.

were able to publish The results, five years after the analyst Kathryn Hopkins first alerted The Department , the scheme may not function.

Paul also claims some of the inmates were told to disclose The Names of their Victims as part of The Process of setting out its problematic history in graphic detail.

"It was physically humiliate them and break them - I saw No Other purpose for You ," he says.

Many of Paul's observations. jointly by Dr. Robert Forde , a retired forensic psychologist, the earlier the Home Office and is an expert for the evaluation of risks

sex

Dr. Forde said: "A prisoner said to me, 'I hate to do this, of course, because I've never had so many deviant sexual thoughts I had, since I started, because we talk about sex, insult all the time and I really want to get away from it all. '"

Another prisoner, who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child, told him he had already asked, give details of what had happened to him in front of pedophiles that had been awakened as a result.

Dr. Forde said some of the prisoners on the SOTP courses would "play The System " to convince the Parole Board they were safe to be released.

He said an inmate had told him: "You have to claim on things such as differing thoughts about the Victims , or indulge in deviant sexual practices, And Then , after the course is completed and You 're doing the post-course evaluation, fall then all of these things, and You tell only The Truth . "

The detainee claimed that this would then result in The Prisoner a lower risk classification will receive a course assessors.

'Booster' course

the Former prisoner, Peter, who has served two sentences for sexual offences against children and indecent images, which tells me the SOTP provided a false sense of security.

"they come out because You think You fixed are," he says.

"It is the feeling. because it is a treatment program, and what the treatment is not power, it fixes what is wrong?"

Now in his 50s, Peter a "booster" - had, of course, when he was first released.

"You 're going back over the crime, so that You can keep the life of this stuff is just not helpful," he says.

"You 're not going to forget what You have done and You know You have the Victims . if You 're going to be a useful member of society, You need to try and move your life forward. "

ground-breaking project

During his second period in prison, Peter completed a one-to-one meetings as part of the Healthy Sex programme, which he is far more of an advantage, because it is not his problem and more on steps to take to overcome its problems.

He now receives support in Corbett Centre, a pioneering project in Nottingham run by the Safer Living Foundation Charity.

It offers a number of emotional and practical support for more than 30 sex offenders living in the community.

"You 're in an environment where the people know what happened," Peter says.

"So You 're not having to start your life with a lie. You can get your life back on Track . "

Though the Corbett centre is showing some promising signs, there will be some years before it reduces known, whether it be re offending, in the long run.

'damage'

A number of Ministry of justice initiatives are also Unproven - the Healthy Sex programme is currently being evaluated, while the two sex offender rehabilitation, which replaces the SOTP -, horizon-and Kaizen, not yet tested.

The MoJ says it is working "closely" with the Correctional Services accreditation and Advisory Panel in the development of programmes delivered in prison and on parole.

The Department , says the Board, agree to, such programs, before they can be used, is that of the "independent experts from science and practice from around The World ".

But two forensic psychiatrists, Penny Brown, and Callum Ross, was so alarmed by the failures in the SOTP program, please call for more control, new forms of treatment.

This Week , the Lancet Psychiatry, a medical journal a paper that You have written published.

"We want to be sure that the government-funded research is subject to the same requirements and high academic standards to all others, and all the other scientists," says Dr. brown.

"The need to show that You should do something You do not override The Risk of actually causing Harm . "
