About USS Pickerel (SS-177)
USS Pickerel (SS-177), a Porpoise-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the pickerel, species of freshwater fish native to the eastern United States and Canada. Her keel was laid on 25 March 1935 by the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut.
