Edo, Japonca dışındaki kaynaklarında Yedo, Yeddo, Yendo, Jedo olarak da geçmiştir. Japonya'nın bugünkü başkenti Tokyo'nun eski adıdır. 1603 yılında Edo Bakufu olarak adlandırılan askerî rejimi ilân edilene kadar imparatorun karargâhı ve politik başkenti Kyoto şehriydi.
